The Womb World Mandala, which forms a pair with the Diamond World Mandala, is the iconographic and ritual guide for all forms of Esoteric Buddhist practice. In Shugendo, the mandala consecrates and circumscribes the space of mountains. It is a kind of technology for bringing the cosmos into ritual actions and establishing mutua identity between the deity and the practitioner. In this work, the two mandalas have been reimagined as gritty, urban-style art forms. Despite the seemingly polluted form, the Siddham for the cosmic Buddha Dainichi still appears in both works, having been drawn 108 times each, ensuring that while the form appears as a departure from what is expected, the essence of the mandala is clearly present through the integration of Siddham characters.
