Hannya Shingyo is the title of the famous Heart Sutra that is recited around the world daily and contains the phrase “form is emptiness; emptiness is form.” In this work, a number of images produced with an ink jet printer are collaged to evoke a world of anxious attention centered on consumption via advertising imagery, surveillance footage, and bar-coded scraps. The bright gold sutra, painted in its entirety in Siddham, appears to burst forth from this world of form and indicates how its message is able to be seen in chaotic environments seemingly far-removed from tranquil meditation.
